Words of Irena

Throughout Irena’s life she watched as her father would help and take care of needy and poor people. Irena’s father tried to teach her that  despite the situation that people maybe in, you should always put yourself out there and help all. Irena kept these thoughts and visions with her through out her life and used it as a guide line through out her career paths.

All of the jobs that Irena chose throughout her life have all been very similar to what her father had preached. In 1939 Irena began her job as a Senior Administrator in the Warsaw Social Welfare Department. One of her responsibilities she had during the war was to be in charge of soup kitchens. A soup kitchen is a place were poor people come to get food and other services that they themselves can not effort. At the soup kitchen Irena gave meals and financial assistance to the poor, elderly, and orphans. This job would be Irena’s first time that she would follow the advice of her father by helping other people.

Through these jobs Irena began her help of Jewish people. Irena’s job in the Welfare Department had canteens for orphans, poor people and the destitute in every city. Jews, whose bank accounts, real estates, and properties have been taken away from the Germans found themselves among the ranks of the poor but the Germans did not allow them to get any help from the assistance they were supposed to get. Irena was able to get at least one person from each of the ten different Welfare Department offices around Germany to help get the Jews the benefits they needed. Through this process she helped get the Jews Christian names which would allow them to get the benefits.
